Father Junípero Serra, OFM, was the Apostle to California. Father Serra was a Spanish priest of the Order of Friars Minor (Franciscans), who entered Upper California on July 1, 1769, with Gaspar de Portola's expedition. Fr. Serra founded 10 Franciscan missions in California and performed the sacrament of Confirmation on over 5,000 people in the territory before his death from a snake bite in 1784. Junípero Serra was beatified by Pope John Paul II on September 25, 1988. |
